Before you do anything else

  1. If the sump pump quit, check the power first: the outlet, the breaker, the float. Only do this from a dry spot.
  2. Shut the main water valve if a pipe or appliance line is leaking.
  3. Move what you can off the floor and out of the wet room.
  4. Photograph the pit, the pump and the waterline before you clean up.

Water in Schererville this year

Turkey Creek runs through the middle of Schererville, and the U.S. Geological Survey watches it at Joliet Street. Early on June 9, 2026, the creek reached action stage at about 12:48 AM CDT after rising about 3.6 feet in 2½ hours, and crested an inch below minor flood stage. On the evening of June 24, the gauge climbed rapidly to flood stage after heavy rain (about 9:15 PM). Shortly after, drivers reported the US-30 underpass near Indianapolis Boulevard flooded (about 9:30 PM).

Earlier in June, a home weather station just east of Dyer, on the Schererville side, logged 2.73 inches of rain in two rounds of storms between 2 and 8 PM on June 11. *Preliminary National Weather Service reports (NWS Chicago Local Storm Reports): Report 1 · Report 2 · Report 3 · Report 4

Schererville’s homes are relatively new. The median home dates to 1989, and about 6 in 10 homes were built in the 1980s, 1990s or 2000s. One in five is a townhome or other single-family attached home, and about 80% are owner-occupied (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter). Newer homes usually rely on a sump pump to keep groundwater out, so a power outage or a worn pump is a common start to a wet basement. In a townhome, a leak can also cross into the unit next door.

What we do

  • Stop the water where we can, and tell you when it needs a plumber.
  • Extract standing water and remove what can’t be properly dried.
  • Dry the space with moisture readings in each wet wall and floor, repeated until they show it’s dry.
  • Photograph it all: the pit, the source, the waterline and the readings.
  • Turn it over, prepped and documented.

If the water came through the roof, see roof repair in Schererville.

If your lower level took the water, see flooded basement cleanup.

The sooner things dry, the less chance mold has. EPA guidance is to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth, including the flooring and drywall next to a sump pit. (EPA: A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home)

How it works: You call, and we listen first. We look, measure and photograph, then give you a line-item estimate.

Documenting it for your claim

Sump failure, groundwater and a burst line can each be treated differently under a policy, so check your policy and talk with your insurer before deciding anything. Our part is a complete record.

We work with your insurance company. We document the damage and meet your adjuster on site, write a line-item estimate, and submit documented supplements for anything missed. We help you understand the process, and the home is left prepped for whoever makes the repairs. We are not a public adjuster, and your claim is between you and your insurance company. In keeping with Indiana law (IC 24-5-11-10.5), we never offer to pay, rebate or waive your deductible, and we don’t promise any payout.

Your Schererville paperwork

  • Hire registered: every contractor and subcontractor working in Schererville must be registered with the Planning & Building Department. Check with the department before you hire. Source: Town of Schererville
  • Permits: properties in the Town’s water and sewer boundaries need a building permit before construction starts. Ask the department whether drywall-only repairs need one.
  • Sump and downspout lines: the Town code bars sending stormwater, groundwater, roof runoff or foundation drainage into the sanitary sewer, so a sump has to discharge elsewhere. Source: municipal code

Schererville water damage FAQs

My sump pump stopped during a storm. What should I check? From a dry spot, check that the pump has power, the float moves freely and the discharge line isn’t frozen or blocked. If the water is past the pit, call us and photograph the pit before anything changes.

Can I run my sump into the sewer to get rid of the water faster? No. Schererville’s code doesn’t allow groundwater or stormwater into the sanitary sewer. Your sump should discharge outside or to an approved storm connection.

I live in a townhome and water came through the shared wall. Where do I start? Dry your side first and photograph both sides if you can. Check your policy and your association’s documents to see who is responsible for which parts.

How do I know a water damage company can work in Schererville? Check with Planning & Building. Registered contractors have a recorded bond and insurance on file with the Town.
