Right now, before anything else

  1. Don’t walk through water that’s near outlets or extension cords.
  2. Cut power to the wet area at the breaker, only if the panel sits somewhere dry and safe to reach.
  3. Carry rugs, boxes and electronics to a dry floor.
  4. Photograph everything as it is before cleanup starts.

Water in Merrillville this year

Two streams set the pace in Merrillville: Turkey Creek and the Deep River. Overnight on June 9, 2026, the Turkey Creek gauge in Merrillville reached action stage after rising about 4 feet in 3 hours (about 12:30 AM CDT). A few hours later, the Deep River in Merrillville reached action stage too, rising about 3¾ feet in 4 hours (about 3:21 AM).

On the evening of June 24, a downpour hit the US-30 corridor. A private weather station 2 miles south of Merrillville recorded 3.10 inches of rain, almost all of it in just under an hour. By about 9:00 PM a car was stalled in floodwater on US-30 near Mississippi Street, and the Town reported street flooding on US-30 near Taft Street. Broadway near 61st and roads between Merrillville and Crown Point flooded as well. A week earlier, on June 17, standing water was reported on I-65 near 61st Avenue (about 4:10 PM). *Preliminary National Weather Service reports (NWS Chicago Local Storm Reports): Report 1 · Report 2 · Report 3

Merrillville’s homes were built in waves. The median home dates to 1979: about 20% were built in the 1960s, and roughly a third came in the 1990s and 2000s. About 61% are single-family detached and 9% attached (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter). Older and newer homes take on water differently. Aging supply lines and sump pumps are the usual suspects in the older homes, while finished lower levels in the newer ones hide water behind drywall.

What we do

  • Stop the source where we can, or tell you plainly when you need a plumber.
  • Extract the water and pull out only the materials that won’t dry in place.
  • Dry the space and take moisture readings on each wet surface, rechecking until the readings show it’s dry.
  • Photograph each stage for your records.
  • Leave it ready for repair work.

If the water came through the roof, see roof repair in Merrillville.

If your lower level took the water, see flooded basement cleanup.

Mold prevention comes down to drying. According to the EPA, water-damaged areas and items should be dried within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth; the moisture readings tell you when yours really are. (EPA: A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home)

How it works: You call, and we listen first. Then we measure, take pictures, and write a line-item estimate you can keep.

Documenting it for your claim

Coverage depends on where the water came from and on your policy. Creek or surface flooding and a burst line are often treated differently, so check your policy and talk with your insurer before you decide anything.

We work with your insurance company. We document the damage and meet your adjuster on site, write a line-item estimate, and submit documented supplements for anything missed. We help you understand the process, through drying and the handoff to your contractor. We are not a public adjuster, and your claim is between you and your insurance company. In keeping with Indiana law (IC 24-5-11-10.5), we never offer to pay, rebate or waive your deductible, and we don’t promise any payout.

Your Merrillville paperwork

  • Licensed contractors only: Merrillville requires all contractors to be licensed with the Town. Check with the Building Department before you hire. Source: Town of Merrillville
  • Electrical and plumbing repairs after water damage need supplemental permits. Electrical permits go to Town-licensed electricians, and plumbing permits to plumbers registered with the Town and licensed by the State. Homeowners doing their own work can apply by affidavit.
  • Drywall-only repairs: the Town lists building permits for new construction and additions. Whether replacing wet drywall needs one is.

Merrillville water damage FAQs

I live near Turkey Creek. What should I watch for after heavy rain? In June, Turkey Creek rose about 4 feet in 3 hours. Keep valuables off the lower-level floor, make sure your sump pump runs, and know where your breaker panel is. If water gets in, photograph it before cleanup.

Will an electrician need a permit to fix outlets that got wet? Yes. Merrillville requires a supplemental electrical permit for alterations to electrical service, issued to a Town-licensed electrician.

How do I know a contractor can work in Merrillville? Check with the Building Department. The Town asks you to confirm a contractor is licensed with Merrillville before hiring, and to get a signed contract.

My finished basement got wet. Does the drywall have to come out? Not always. Moisture readings tell us how far the water wicked up. We remove only what won’t dry and show you the readings either way.
