Tell us what’s happening, and we’ll help you figure out the next step.

Do these first

  1. Don’t touch anything electrical while standing in water. Use the breaker only if it’s dry and you can reach it.
  2. Get valuables, papers and photos up and out.
  3. Take pictures before cleanup: the drain or the source, the waterline, the damaged items.

Water in Highland this year

Highland sits between two waterways. Hart Ditch runs along its western edge with Munster, and the Little Calumet River runs along its northern edge. Both rose fast in June 2026. Overnight on June 9, Hart Ditch reached action stage at about 1:23 AM CDT, rising about 3.3 feet in just over two hours. The Little Calumet at Indianapolis Boulevard reached action stage at about 1:09 AM. On June 17, the USGS gauge on Hart Ditch climbed rapidly to flood stage (about 4:15 PM). Drivers reported flooding along I-80/94 in Highland and Munster (about 4:05 PM), and an INDOT camera at Kennedy Avenue showed several inches of water on the inside lanes (about 4:31 PM). Water stood on I-80 near Kennedy Avenue again on June 24 (about 9:05 PM). *Preliminary National Weather Service reports (NWS Chicago Local Storm Reports): Report 1 · Report 2 · Report 3 · Report 4 · Report 5

Highland was largely built after World War II. Nearly half of its homes date from the 1950s and 1960s, the median year built is 1967, about 70% are single-family detached, and 78% are owner-occupied (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter).

What we do

  • Stop the source where we can, and tell you when it’s a plumber’s or the Town’s job.
  • Extract the water and remove wet materials that can’t be dried in place.
  • Dry the space with moisture readings in walls, floors and framing, repeated until the readings show it’s dry.
  • Photograph it from start to finish.
  • Pass the records to your contractor.

If the water came through the roof, see roof repair in Highland.

If your lower level took the water, see flooded basement cleanup.

Mold needs moisture, so drying is the prevention. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth; your readings show when the framing has caught up with the surface. (EPA: A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home)

How it works: You call, and we listen first. We look, measure and photograph, then write a line-item estimate.

Documenting it for your claim

Surface water and plumbing leaks can each be treated differently in a policy, so check your policy and talk with your insurer. We give you a clean, dated record.

We work with your insurance company. We document the damage and meet your adjuster on site, write a line-item estimate, and submit documented supplements for anything missed. We help you understand the process, and we pass our moisture records along to your contractor. We are not a public adjuster, and your claim is between you and your insurance company. In keeping with Indiana law (IC 24-5-11-10.5), we never offer to pay, rebate or waive your deductible, and we don’t promise any payout.

Your Highland paperwork

  • Licensed contractors only: the Town’s building permit form says all contracted work must be done by contractors licensed with the Town of Highland, and the Building Department keeps lists of licensed contractors, plumbers and electricians. Source: Town of Highland (1) · Town of Highland (2)
  • Repair permits: remodels go on the Town’s building permit application. Ask the Building Department whether drywall-only repairs need one.

Highland water damage FAQs

My 1950s house has a crawl space, not a basement. Does that change anything? Yes. Crawl spaces trap moisture and are harder to dry and inspect, so we take readings in the framing and subfloor, not just the surface.

How do I check that a contractor can work in Highland? Ask the Town’s Building Department. Highland licenses contractors and requires a recorded bond and insurance on file.
