First steps, in this order

  1. Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or the furnace. If you can’t reach the breaker panel from a dry spot, leave it.
  2. If it’s coming up a floor drain, stop running water in the house (laundry, dishwasher, showers). It all drains to the same line.
  3. Move rugs, boxes and electronics off the wet floor.
  4. Take photos and a short video before anything is moved or thrown out.

Water in Downers Grove this year

The East Branch of the DuPage River runs just west of the village, and St. Joseph Creek runs through it. The 2026 storms brought water from both the sky and the streets. On July 4, DuPage County dispatch reported 5th Street flooded near Fairview Avenue, with a car stalled in the water (about 6:40 PM CDT). Earlier that day, police closed IL-53 between Park Boulevard and IL-56 just west of town because the East Branch DuPage River was flooding (time adjusted to about noon).

August brought more. On August 1, a home weather station just west-southwest of downtown logged 3.6 inches of rain (report at noon), and a few inches of water stood on Highland Avenue north of Good Samaritan Hospital (about 1:30 PM). On August 9, residents reported a few inches of water flowing through yards in Downers Grove (about 2:30 PM). *Preliminary National Weather Service reports (NWS Chicago Local Storm Reports): Report 1 · Report 2 · Report 3 · Report 4 · Report 5

About 62% of homes are single-family detached and three in four are owner-occupied. Building was steady through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s (about half of all homes), and the median home dates to 1974 (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter).

What we do

  • Find the source with you: rain seepage, a sump that couldn’t keep up, a supply line, or a floor drain. We document where the water came in.
  • Extract the water and remove what can’t be properly dried.
  • Dry the room and take moisture readings at each wet wall and floor until the readings show it’s dry.
  • Photograph each step so your file is complete.
  • Hand it off to your contractor.

If your lower level took the water, see flooded basement cleanup.

The EPA points homeowners to drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth, so we keep measuring until the numbers say it’s done. (Source: EPA)

How it works: You call, and we listen first. Then we measure, photograph and give you a line-item estimate in plain language.

  • Stormwater flooding: the Village’s stormwater FAQ says to call Public Works (9-1-1 for emergencies). The Village doesn’t pump out basements. A Stormwater Cost Share program helps with flooding that affects two or more properties. Source: Village of Downers Grove

Downers Grove water damage FAQs

Will the Village pump out my basement? No. The Village’s stormwater FAQ says it doesn’t pump out basements, though it may pump flooded yards case by case. Call Public Works for street or yard flooding.

Water ran through my yard and into a window well. What now? Start by drying the inside. Then photograph the outside, including the window well, the grading and the downspouts, so you can see where the water went.
