July 4, 2026 was Darien’s flood day. Heavy late-afternoon storms moved over the area, and a private weather station between Woodridge and Darien recorded 5.19 inches of rain, about 4.9 inches of it in the hour ending 5:30 PM CDT. A U.S. Geological Survey rain gauge along North Frontage Road in Darien measured 4.05 inches in six hours, 2.4 inches of it in one hour.
Flash flooding followed quickly. Drivers reported flooding on I-55 between Lemont Road and IL-83 (about 5:00 PM). A DuPage County DOT camera showed Plainfield Road under several inches of water near Manning Road (about 5:15 PM). Photos showed water spreading across streets and sidewalks into numerous yards in Darien, and dispatchers relayed reports of flooded structures through the evening. South of town, the Waterfall Glen trail washed out near Clarendon Hills Road where a small creek overflowed. *Preliminary National Weather Service reports (NWS Chicago Local Storm Reports): Report 1 · Report 2 · Report 3 · Report 4 · Report 5 · Report 6
Darien is mostly 1970s and 1980s housing. The median home was built in 1978, and about 61% of homes are single-family detached with another 17% attached (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter).
If the water came in from above, through a ceiling or upper wall, we document where it came in.
If your lower level took the water, see flooded basement cleanup.
The EPA’s guidance is to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth, which is why a lower level that only looks dry still gets measured. (Source: EPA)

What your policy pays for depends on your policy and on where the water came from. Surface water and a burst pipe are often treated differently, so check your policy and talk with your insurer.

Do I need a permit to replace wet drywall in Darien? Not for drywall or plaster alone, according to the City. If outlets, wiring or plumbing need work, those trades need permits.
Darien got almost five inches in an hour. Will my lower level dry on its own? Usually not quickly enough. Water wicks into drywall and under flooring. Moisture readings show where it went, even when the surface looks dry.
