Safety comes first. If water touches anything electrical, stay out; if a pipe burst, close the main valve; then get pictures. The full list is on our water damage page.
Aurora’s flooding this year followed its creeks and parks. When heavy rain stalls over the Fox Valley, Indian Creek and the low ground around it are where trouble starts.
July 4 stands out. At 8:00 PM CDT, a flash flood report placed water about 1 mile north-northeast of Aurora: City of Aurora reports that North Broadway closed near Indian Creek due to flooding.
On July 27 at 3:30 PM CDT, another report in Aurora noted: Multiple reports of street flooding in Aurora and western Naperville area.
On July 4 at 5:30 PM CDT, another report about 2 miles northeast of Aurora noted: Garfield Park inundated, with water spilling over a berm onto Lehnertz Avenue and into nearby yards.
If you live near Garfield Park or along Indian Creek, July 4 is the date to check your photos against. Water that reached a yard can find a window well or a floor drain next.
The reports mention Indian Creek.

Aurora housing at a glance: median year built 1987; 32% built before 1970; 46% built since 1990; 59% detached single-family; 66% owner-occupied (ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates: Census Reporter). In newer homes, the sump pump and the finished basement are common places for water to show up first, especially if the pump loses power during a storm.
Aurora spans the Fox River and both banks of several creeks, so two neighbors a mile apart can have very different water stories. If your basement stayed dry on July 4 but the yard didn’t, that’s still worth noting for the next storm.
Where your Aurora home sits on the map matters. About 93% of the city drains to the Fox River, through Blackberry Creek along the west edge, Indian Creek across the northeast quarter (it joins the Fox just north of downtown) and Waubonsie Creek in the southeast; the remaining 7% or so drains east to the West Branch of the DuPage River. In heavy rain, basements near the river corridor can see water come up through floor drains. If your property is near the Fox River floodplain, the City’s rules require the lowest floor, basement included, of a new or substantially improved home to sit 3 feet above the base flood elevation, so a major rebuild can trigger a substantial-damage review. The Engineering Division keeps FEMA’s flood maps and studies and takes written floodplain information requests, and because Aurora takes part in FEMA’s Community Rating System, flood insurance premiums in the city are discounted.

For Aurora homeowners, the job covers mapping the wet areas, removing what can’t be properly dried and drying the rest, then handing off a full moisture record. Nothing comes out without an explanation. See how the process works.
According to the EPA, water-damaged areas should be dried within 24–48 hours to prevent mold; our moisture readings track that. (Source: EPA) More in drying and moisture readings.
